Versions

A module’s version is the provider version it was generated from. v5.8.0 of azurerm_resource_group was generated from azurerm 5.8.0, so every module you use from one release matches the provider you run.

Two kinds of tag

Tag Means Moves
vX.Y.Z The newest build for provider version X.Y.Z Yes, when we improve the generator and rebuild
vX.Y.Z.N One specific build of it Never

Pin vX.Y.Z to receive fixes and improvements to that provider version automatically. Pin vX.Y.Z.N when you need the code to stay byte-for-byte the same. The first build is also tagged vX.Y.Z.0 before the floating tag first moves, so you can always go back to it.

When new versions arrive

We aim to build and publish a new minor or patch release of a provider within five business days of its release. Major releases can need changes to how we generate, so they arrive as soon as we reasonably can.

  • Private edition: new versions arrive in your organisation as soon as we publish them, while automatic updates are on.
  • Public edition: every version becomes public 90 days after we publish it.

Old versions never go away

Every version you have used stays available, with its tags. Moving to a newer version is a change you make when you choose, by changing the ref.
